What My Short Time at Macy’s Taught Me

Lately, I’ve been doing a lot of soul searching.
After graduating from the University of La Verne with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration, I started my first job outside of college at Macy’s—my first real step into the professional world. I began at the bottom and was slowly working my way up, applying what I had learned in school to a real, fast-paced environment. Unfortunately, my time there was cut short after I suffered a fall on a rainy day, which resulted in several injuries and required me to take a leave of absence. I am currently seeking professional treatment as I focus on recovery.
Even so, my time at Macy’s left a lasting impression on me.
What stood out most was the sense of family within the workplace. Macy’s isn’t just a retail store—it’s a complex organization powered by people who depend on one another. From the sales floor to behind the scenes, from opening shifts to closing hours, I witnessed firsthand how much coordination, commitment, and care goes into running a store of that scale.
I enjoyed being able to explore the entire building and learn how each role connected to the next. Seeing the operation from multiple angles gave me a deeper appreciation for teamwork, leadership, and the behind-the-scenes work that often goes unnoticed. Along the way, I made a few meaningful friendships—connections that made the work more enjoyable and reminded me how important people are in any organization.
Most importantly, this experience strengthened my confidence in myself as a worker and as a professional. Starting from the ground up reinforced values I already held—showing up consistently, taking pride in your work, and respecting every role within a team. Even in a short period of time, I gained clarity about the kind of environments I thrive in and the type of professional I want to become.
When I’m fully healed and ready to return to work, I feel confident in my ability to contribute, grow, and make a name for myself within an organization. With a business foundation, real-world experience, and a strong appreciation for people and process, I’m motivated to continue learning, taking on responsibility, and building a meaningful career.
Sometimes life presses pause when you’re just getting started—but even short chapters can be impactful. I’m grateful for what this one taught me.
